What is the URL Expand button?

While URL shorteners help some Web applications save a bit of space, for users it hides the true identity of the site they're about to visit. The URL Expand button extracts the original URLs, allowing each user to decide whether or not to visit the site.

How can I organize the data differently?

You can customize the sidebar view as you like. Just press on the "EDIT" button and drag-n-drop the fields according to your needs. You can also make sure a field is always visible on the top level by pressing on the eye button.

I can't see the sidebar, what do I do?

You can open the sidebar using these options:

  • Click the Web-Exposed status bar
  • Click the sidebar button on the toolbar
  • Open the menu View -> Sidebar -> Web-Exposed Sidebar

If you still can't see the sidebar, please contact us so we can help you.

Will my browser run slower with this plug-in?

While the process of gathering site data requires several HTTP requests and some text analysis, we make a great effort not to add any delays to the browsing experience. For users who want to ensure that their browsing experience is not affected, uncheck the "Fast Load" option in the Option Dialog. This will ensure that Web-Exposed will start exposing the site only after the entire site has been loaded in your browser.

Do you use local cache to increase performance?

Yes we do. Most of the data we gather is done at the domain level and stored locally. This means that when you are browsing to a site, for example www.xyz.com, we store all the data locally so whenever you browse to any page on the xyz domain again, we won’t have to issue any new requests.

Why do I need the local cache?

From a study we did about the cache hit rate, we found that after a few days the cache provides about 90% of the data the plug-in needs, while only 10% are newly discovered sites. This means that typically, no extra requests are made and the data is available within milliseconds.

How do I know my privacy is protected?

While we send some data to be analyzed and stored for future use on our servers, we only collect data about sites…not about our users. We take your privacy seriously and we will do our best to ensure privacy.

What is the "I want to support Web-Exposed Community URL" option mean?

In our efforts to make the Web more open and data more accessible, we ask our users to help us expose the Web. This means that for every site the user asks us about, we send back a URL, which we call "Community URL," for the user to expose for us. If the user doesn't want to help us in our mission, they can uncheck this option in the Option Dialog, and they will only expose sites that they browse to.

Does the Community URL put me at risk?

When we gather data about a Web site, we don't browse to the actual site; rather we get the HTML text without running it. This prevents security concerns.
